Stores that Reward You for Bag Recycling in the US

Stores that reward shoppers for bringing their own bags and recycling are listed below.

Shopping Bag rebates are common across the USA, and eventually we may follow in the footsteps of other countries around the world. Many nations - Australia, Bangladesh, Italy, South Africa, Taiwan and Ireland, just to name a few - are either taxing or banning plastic bag use. Check out our Plastic Bag News page for more details on what's happening here in the US and around the world.

Stores with Rebates:

  • Hannaford Stores offer a 5 cent per bag rebate on fabric bags only used for your purchase.
  • Price Chopper Stores offer a 3 cent per bag rebate on any bag that you bring and re-use for your purchase.
  • QFC (Quality Food Centers) credit 3.5 cents to the Nature Conservency for every bag you bring and use
  • Safeway also offers a 3 cent per bag rebate, discounted from your purchase total.
  • Trader Joe's gives you an entry into their weekly store drawing for a $25 store certificate.
  • Whole Foods Markets offer a 5 cent rebate for every bag you bring and use

There are many small chain stores that reward bag use throughout the US - Food Co-ops, Health Food Stores, small chains and Mom and Pop Stores. Our goal here at rags-to-bags.com is to eventually catalog as many as possible, for your benefit. If you have any info to share with us, we'll be glad to include it here. Please contact us.

To share as much detail as we can about all these stores that reward you for BYOB, we are breaking the info down by state. Please check back to see if your state below is a clickable link - they eventually all will be.

In the UK:

Tesco is Britain’s largest Grocery and general merchandise chain. As of 1/31/08, Tesco shoppers had saved more than a billion plastic shopping bags over the prior 18 months.

Tesco has a rewards program – the Tesco Clubcard – and a point is awarded for every dollar spent. The program promoting reusable bags now is called “Green Points”, and in addition to awarding a point for every bag avoided, Tesco rewards shoppers for turning in toner cartridges and cell phones, also.

In Canada:

Capers in Vancouver, British Columbia is a Canadian division of Whole Foods Market. Like WFM, Capers will eliminate the use of Plastic bags in their stores, and offer a 10-cent rebate to customers who bring their own resuable bags.

This change will take effect on Earth Day, April 22, 2008.
